Web Design Critique: Tradies

4-3

A company’s website is its online persona; its representative on the space of the internet. If Tradies’ website is any indication, they got the message, sporting a welcoming blue and white colour scheme, with great, welcoming images of family dining in Helensburgh, and a sports bar in Gymea, among other things.

In terms of layout, the site’s pretty well done. A straightforward header, with the company logo and the expected links to all of the site’s pages. Notably, the first link on the header is to the Feedback page, followed by the Community page, then the Corporate page; a layout that speaks a lot about what the site’s message is. Conveniently, the main header is always at the top, even if the visitor to the site keeps scrolling down; allowing constant access to the navigation options it provides.

Following that is the main body, which tends to be punctuated by a relevant image, or a set of relevant images to the page’s topic. These tend to be vibrant, and appealing, which makes a lot of sense; they’re how the company promotes itself. Perks like family dining in Helensburgh, events like marathons, that sort of thing. The images are well chosen, and carefully considered, even taking into the colour scheme of the site into account.

The text feels less like content, and more like compliments to the image. The font is small, and is grey, not black, which can make them a bit hard to notice with the white background and the bright images. There’s a high contrast mode and a higher text option, located on the left side of every page. With both of these options, the text is a great deal easier to see. The images are mostly brightly lit, so they’re also far more noticeable. The content itself tends to be relatively laconic; straightforward and simple, but far too short. A few sentences, and a few paragraphs on every page. They say what needs to be said, and little else, though it could use to be a bit more descriptive.

Navigation is actually fairly convenient, as the site uses a lot of links; a lot of its images and text tend to be complimented by links to other pages. This is, of course, on top of the aforementioned main header following the browser even when scrolling down. There, at the bottom of the page, also lies more information about the company, as well as a text box for signing up for the newsletter, likely to be seen only by people with interest in what Tradies offers.

For the most part, the site is very well done, being convenient to navigate, with appealing visuals and straightforward text. It could use a bit of polishing, however, in order to make it a bit more balanced, in terms of content.

Web Design Critique: Wheels Motorcycles

About Wheels Motorcycles

Wheels Motorcycles is a company that sells motorcycle clothing online featuring the top brands in the United Kingdom. The business has been in operation for more than a decade boasting trained staffs that are knowledgeable of the motorcycle products in the market. The company’s website is found at https://shop.wheelsmotorcycles.co.uk/.

The first thing that stands out upon complete loading of the site is that there are a lot of going on but at the same time it does not convey the feeling of overcrowding. The solid white background helped because it toned down everything and highlights all the thumbnails. The website also follows a three-color scheme – black, red and white. Majority of the texts are in black while the prices are all highlighted in red font colour. The call-to-action buttons are also in red. The elements are contrasting in a good way and there is also the similarity that connects almost all of the contents found on the homepage.

Another thing which I loved most about the site is the search bar at the top of the page. This is an element that many e-commerce sites tend to overlook thinking that they should encourage their customers to browse through their product lists. The problem is that if the shop offers hundreds or thousands of products, browsing can take a lot of time. A search bar is necessary for customers who know right away what they want to purchase.

The menu at the top of the page was also well-organized into sub-categories which make it easier for shoppers. There is also a category that separates the products by brand which gathers another thumb up.

With regards to the font and the size, it is easy to read and understand. Navigation around the site is easy as there are links to follow. It is recommended to make the logo another element which takes back the user back to the homepage regardless of where they are exploring on the site. The logo of the company needs to be enlarged as well in order to make the brand more recognizable and hard to forget. Overall, the website of Wheels Motorcycles for motorcycle clothing online is well designed and professional looking.

Web Design Critique: Safeway Security Screens

2-5

Safeway Security Screens specializes in security doors in Perth from manufacturing to installation. The company has been in the business for more than 28 years and it has been passed down from one generation to another. Now let us move on to critiquing the website.

Searchability. When I opened my Google Chrome browser and searched using the keywords “security doors Perth”, the website of Safeway Security Screens is included in the first page of the search engine result. It just needs to work more on search engine optimization to increase its ranking because there are at least 10 other companies listed before it.

Usability. The homepage loads quickly and all the links inside the website are working properly. These are good signs because it will encourage visitors to stay on the page longer and the experience will more likely encourage them to revisit the website someday.

Navigation. Moving around the site is quite simple as there are only a few pages included – Home, About, Security Options, FAQ and Contact. Of all five, only Security Options have sub-pages. Even those who are not computer savvy will be able to find their way around the site. The call to action button “Request A Quote” is located in every page within the website.

Design. The website does not have wow factor to it yet it looks professional. The company highlights the products they are offering which would not have been possible if there are other distractions in the page such as animations or flashing elements. Overall, the design is simple and it follows a consistent color combination found in the logo of the company.

Content. The website is not loaded with contents so there is no chaos going on. The Home and About page contains brief descriptions and background regarding the family-owned business. The only pages with many texts are under Security Options as each type of product is highlighted and given their own pages in order for customers to know what they will get and what to expect with the actual product.

Overall, the website is simple and effective when it comes to offering security doors in Perth but it should work more on increasing its search engine result ranking in order to stand out among the competition.

About Effective Heating

Effective Heating is a company that offers boiler maintenance and boiler repairs in Leeds. Its excellent service in the business has earned them a reputable identity in the boiler service to both commercial and domestic customers.

Searchability. When searching for the keywords “boiler repairs in Leeds”, the website appears on the first page of the Google search result which is a good indication of its familiarity and popularity. Being on the first page of the search results invites more online users to open the website as their first preference.

Usability. The website is user-friendly and is full of relevant information about boiler repair systems. The menu tabs on top of the page that are horizontally arranged provide the different areas of service that are offered by the website.

Navigation. The menus for each area of service of the company are arranged horizontally on top of the web page, however, there are no drop-down menus provided as each menu when opened already gives the specific service offered. The quick links at the bottom of the web page provide easy navigation because online users do not have to go back to the top page to open the menus. As you scroll down the page, a booking link can be seen which gives you convenience if you opt to make a booking already. It has a complete list of all the areas they cover and the cities they are present which provides easy information to the users.

Design and layout. The design and layout of the website is quite simple with minimal colors used.  It could have more attractive if they displayed pictures of boilers and their uniformed personnel to describe the website more clearly. The names and the logos of their affiliated manufacturers and the accrediting institutions that support their dependability to the consumers are situated below the webpage.

Contents. The contents of the website of Effective Heating which is a company for boiler repairs and maintenance states all the relevant information needed by people who are looking for a reliable and reputable boiler repair company. There is a complete contact details written at the bottom of the page. Everything is well structured and clearly written.

Web Design Critique: Solitaire Bangkok

3

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a 4 star hotel in Bangkok or a electronics company, having a good company site is a must in the modern age.

Solitaire Hotel Bangkok got the message, with a well-designed site that presents the brand quite well. In some ways, however,  it feels over-presented.

When it comes to navigation, the main menu with links to pages in the site is always on top of the page, even if the visitor scrolls down, which is quite convenient. This menu has links to rooms, promos, restaurants, as well as gallery and additional contact information for the hotel; additional, in that the site helpfully lists the hotel’s telephone number, rough address, as well as account control and booking options at the top of the page alongside the hotel’s logo. Additionally, visitors to the site can book anytime they want, as the booking interface is always at the bottom of the page, moving as the browser scrolls.

Speaking of the hotel’s logo, its colour scheme, gold and dark grey on white, is the colour scheme that the site sports throughout, something it adheres to quite nicely, though the dark grey text would probably work better if it was actually black.

As mentioned before, the site is well-presented, with lots of pictures and other visual aids that help give visitors to the site a good idea of what the hotel’s actually like and what services it has on offer. There’s a few videos and a 3D space viewer, so there’s a fair amount of scrolling down needed. Naturally, the pages can take a while for particularly slow network connections, thanks to all the content.

The text itself is concise and straight to the point, wasting little time with superfluous details and discussing the hotel and why people should stay there, showing how much the site thrives on its presentation.  Even links that lead to additional information about specific services or locations in the hotel tend to prefer short sentences and minimal text.

All in all, the site is well-designed, excellently structured, and well done, though it does come across as over-done in certain ways, which makes it feel a tad imbalanced in its structure. Any 4 star hotel in Bangkok should try to impress potential customers, but there is such a thing as trying too hard.
