Texas Supreme Court Cancels The Bar Exam In July, Schedules October Online Test

Texas Supreme Court Cancels The Bar Exam In July, Schedules October Online Test

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a lot of countries into the wringer, and the US is no exception. Texas, in particular, got hit hard, with a surge in cases early in June. In response, the Texas Supreme Court canceled the bar exam scheduled for July and scheduled an online test on October.

The announcement, visible at their website, was due to an emergency order, did allow for the scheduling of an in-person bar exam to be available, should the government and public health officials consider it safe, at Sept. 9-10.

The Supreme Court recently reduced the regularly scheduled bar exam in July from 3 days to just 2, on top of adding a 2-day September test and safety requirements, which include, among other things, mandatory face masks, in order to cut down on the odds of COVID-19 transmission.

The in-person testing was cancelled, however, due to deans from 10 Texan law schools, including the dean of the University of Texas, petitioning the Supreme Court. The 10 deans stated that in-person testing would be too dangerous, even with safety precautions, with Texas seeing increasing COVID-19 cases throughout the state.

Their sentiments were even backed up by law students across the state.

The Supreme Court held a debate on the matter, with the order coming out with four concurring opinions against one dissent.

Justices Eva Guzman and Debra Lehrmann stated that they were against the removal of the tests as a licensing requirement because it would attract a lot of flak, primarily questions about consumer protection on their rights.

They did, however, state that an online bar exam on their website is a reasonable and safe alternative for the Supreme Court and future lawyers, one that works nicely with their longstanding requirements for licensing.

Justices Brett Busby and Jane Bland suggesting an apprenticeship program in place of the in-person test, while Justice Jimmy Blacklock wanted the ones who signed up for the July test to be able to take it as planned.

In contrast, Chief Justice Nathan Hecht and Justice Paul Green dissented, saying that the law students who were registered for the in-person test in July, as well as the online test in September, basically had the ability to practice law without actually taking the exam.

Web Design Critique: Elite Tutor

There’s elegance in simplicity; sometimes, less really is more. That’s what Elite Tutor, a Singaporean tuition firm, is going for their site, with a straightforward design and layout that doesn’t beat around the bush.

First thing that visitors to Elite Tutor’s site will see are the words “Need a Tutor?”, in large font, displayed prominently at the middle of the home page. It’s a question, true, but one that boldly communicates what the tuition firm is about without the need for any lengthy explanation or fancy visual aid.

This straightforward, simplistic, practically minimalistic, approach is the design aesthetic of the site. A simple white background contrasted with black text, with the occasional splash of color from important icons and logos.

The links for getting a tutor, the firm’s contact information, the link to their WhatsApp, and the link to their zendesk chat, these are a few of the things on the site that add a splash of color while also providing useful navigation and communication tools to visitors. They’re hard to miss, work quite nicely, are always accessible, and don’t distract from the main content, even though they use different colors, for example, the WhatsApp link is bright blue,, the live support interface is bright green, and the ‘request a tutor’ link is a black, pulsing icon that’s always located on the top left of the screen.

These aforementioned icons help expedite navigation in Elite Tutor’s site, alongside links to the other pages located atop the screen. All these elements, as mentioned before, never move from their positions relative to the browser, allowing visitors to access their functions whenever they need to, which is very convenient.

If anything feels wrong about Elite Tutor’s site, it’s the minimalistic design approach making the site feel empty at times. There’s a good amount of text to scroll through, all of which are informative without feeling overlong, but the issue is that there are no colorful logos or vibrant images of tutors or students to give the site a sense of life or a humanizing element.

The professional approach is something Elite Tutor does very well, but perhaps it could afford to put some faces on their customers or their staff. Learning and teaching, after all, is a very human process.

Web Design Critique: https://exeterorthodontics.com

The first thing that you will notice with ExeterOrthodontics.com is its simple design. The focus of web design is information which it wants to share to users.  Any aspects that will distract attention are greatly minimized if not totally eliminated. Choices are very limited so that the user can decide very quickly.

The most relevant elements of the website are the “request appointment” and “contact us today” buttons. Why? Because any user who visits an orthodontist’s website has decided that he wants his teeth fixed through traditional braces or clear aligners. It is very rare for anyone to make the effort to browse through a dental website without any valid reason. “Request appointment” is very visible and cannot be missed by any user.

Content is tailored to a specific user although it doesn’t mean that other users cannot benefit from the information provided in the homepage. Content is broken into bite-size pieces for easy readability. Photographs help break the monotony of text. However, if you do not look closely, you might miss the “text us” buttons. Before and after pictures are very important for the website of orthodontists because it provides users with an idea on how their teeth will look like after treatment.

Highlighting the cheap price of braces and aligners at $3,995 is a good trick to catch the attention of potential patients. It is cheaper than the average price asked by orthodontists in the United States. By explaining why prices are low, it removes all the doubts on the patient’s mind.

Users are lazy. They scan first before they read. When they are scanning, even the tiniest distraction can draw their attention away from what is really important. Because there is less clutter in this website, it maximizes impact. All the other elements that are left complement each other making it easy for information to be understood.

Colour helps in contrast but also infers meaning. When users come across the blue colour, they automatically understand what they need to do or where it will lead them to. White is generously used and contrasts well with blue. The colour theme makes the site look very professional.

Web Design Critique: Earthwise Hauling

Web Design Critique: Earthwise Hauling

Organization, proper presentation; a company has to look trustworthy, even when they deal with junk. Especially so, in fact. If Earthwise Hauling’s site; earthwisehauling.com, is any indication, they got the memo.

The company’s goal is to provide eco-friendly junk removal, and their color scheme communicates that intention quite well, with a white and green pairing that gives the site a friendly feel. This friendly aesthetic is something the site embraces, using selected icons and images, the latter of which also gives it a much needed human element.

As for the content, it’s well organized, and kept concise, with good use of bullets, tables, and short paragraphs. It sticks to the site’s goal of looking friendly by using brighter shades of green for highlighting, and Sans Serif font to give it that soft aesthetic, which works well.

While there’s a lot of visual media, they don’t feel overwhelming, nor do they overpower the text, though there is a bit of scrolling needed for pages. They also add a bit of interactivity within the site, like with the Services and Pricing page, which has the options listed in a table, with options affecting the visual of the hauling truck located to its right.

Navigation is straightforward, with the standard main menu up top with all the links to the pages, as well as the associated social media accounts for the company. It sticks to the top of the browser while scrolling down, letting users access it all the time. There’s a button that automatically scrolls back up to the top of every page, and there’s also an abundance of links on the content itself, so navigation feels organic and convenient.

On the technical side, the site’s page code is beautifully done; organized and makes the most use of CSS and Javascript, with lots of callouts for formatting. As a result, most of what’s visible when viewing the site’s source are links, neatly organized with judicious use of line breaks.

Overall, earthwisehauling.com is a beautifully done piece, with great organization and use of color and visual images to help sell its status as a junk hauling business.
